Plas Awen is in Pontypool, a small town with a rich industrial heritage in iron and coal.  We’re the easternmost valley of South Wales, bordering the Rhondda to the west, the Brecon Beacons to the north, Monmouthshire, the Wye Valley and the Forest of Dean to the east and the bigger cities of Newport and Cardiff to the south.

Which means that within easy traveling distance we have cities, forestry, hills, castles, the wide spaces of a National Park,  fascinating industrial heritage sites, Roman remains, Bronze age hill forts, standing stones, farmland, vineyards, beaches and pretty historic market towns.  There are living history museums, art galleries, libraries, concert halls, theatres, sports stadiums and leisure centres.

Wales has the oldest living language in Europe, and we’re very proud of it.  Expect to twist your tongue around the pronunciation of place names and road signs, but don’t worry—we all speak English, too.  And many people left Wales for the USA, so you might be surprised to discover you have roots here.

Our home is perched above the Crumlin valley, which was once a major route for transporting coal and is now a beautifully wooded road.  It’s a peaceful spot with wide-ranging views, but it’s easily accessible.   We’re on a hillside called the Tranch, where in the 18th century the Reverend Edmund Jones wrote about his sightings of the Twlwyth Teg, the fairies.

Where are we?
